Over the past year, COVID has put families in crisis for the first time. Feeding America estimates that food banks across the country are feeding 55% more people than ever before. The Community Café of Urban Ministries of Durham is no different. It serves an average of 712 meals a day. At three meals a day, that means, on average, about 237 people are being fed every day. The Café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to 237 people every day of the year. Some of these meals are provided in brown paper bags for a takeaway option.
Our location at 3447 N. Roxboro Street in Durham, North Carolina 27704 has donated uplifting paper bags for these meals, as described in their volunteer needs. If you would like to donate your own bags, buy the #6 brown paper bag and write or draw something to uplift. This will give those in need something to smile about when they pick up their meal.
United Ministries of Durham
Founded in 1983, the United Ministries of Durham (UMD) has remained committed to bettering the downtown Durham community. Initially, the efforts that make up the Urban Ministries of Durham were separate. The Durham Community Shelter for HOPE, St. Philip’s Community Cafe, and the United Methodist Mission Society all merged with the Urban Ministries Center in 2001 to form the Urban Ministries of Durham. Since these organizations joined together, UMD has worked extensively with community resources to provide for the needs of Durham, North Carolina. Moreover, they’re primarily working to aid Durham’s poor, hungry, and homeless emergency needs. This group offers food, shelter, and a better future to their neighbors in need. With respect, collaboration, and accountability, they work to connect with the community to end homelessness and fight poverty.
They have plenty of volunteer opportunities to take advantage of. There are ways to give back, from serving meals to providing move-out kits for those moving out of their shelters. Read more HERE.
