It is stressful enough to move as a human, and many don’t see that animals get stressed too. They don’t know what is going on, but there are ways to ease their transition. Here are some ways from the ASPCA to make your furry friends more comfortable with this.
Get Them Used To the Neighborhood
When you are narrowing down your choices, get a sense of the other dogs in the neighborhood. Look for any other dog walkers. Keep an eye out for any aggressive or unleashed dogs. If you see any, it would be best to consider another area.
Pack Everything up Sensitively
Animals are not big fans of change, so moving day can be very hard for them. Keep them in a familiar room and shut the door to keep them out of the movers’ way and keep their spirits high. Pack this room last to keep them comfortable. It is even better if you can get them out of the house to keep them entirely distracted during the process.
Plan For the Road Trip
If you are moving far away, your pet needs time to get used to the long drive. It would be smart to get them acclimated to crates and cars for weeks or months leading up to your move. Use crate tips from the Humane Society. After they are comfortable in the crate, take them for short drives. Consistency and rewards will build their trust and help on moving day.
Move Them In
Moving in can be the most difficult part of the process. Once you get to your new home, it can be tempting to open the doors and let your animal explore at their will. For more skittish animals, this new environment can be overwhelming. Limit their access to only one room. Make it inviting with food, water, and their favorite toys. As they get comfortable, introduce new rooms. After you’ve shown them all of the rooms they are allowed in, they will feel at home in no time.
