Storage Tip: How to Pack Glassware

Glassware is one of the most fragile things in your house. That is why you must have these items protected when you are putting them away. We have the industry’s best practices for stowing your glassware safely!

1. Properly ready each box you will use
Map out the number of boxes you will need. Fit packing supplies in each so the bottom of the box is fully covered twice. This can include anything from extra linens to packing peanuts so there is a buffer between the box and your items.

2. Make sure each item is wrapped in two layers
The best way to protection for your items is layers. Each item of glassware is to be wrapped first in paper and then in multiple layers of bubble wrap and secure with tape. Make sure the bubbles of the bubble wrap are facing towards the item for a proper cushion.

3. Place each item into the boxes carefully
Even though each item would have its own box ideally, that is not always practical. If you must stack your items, always place the heaviest item on the bottom. Sheets of cardboard or linens in between your items will prevent any cracks. Make sure to leave room at the top.

4. Pack each box with packing supplies.
Once the glassware is done being packed, fill each box with more packing material. This may include bubble wrap, crinkle paper, newspaper sheets, packing peanuts, etc. By surrounding the items with packing supplies, the items will not have room to shift around.

5. Gently shake the box
Secure each packed box and give it a small shake. If any movement can be heard, you will need to continue filling the box with packing material. For needed additional security, place the box into a larger one and fill that one with even more packing material. This really protects your item from moving. Do the shake test once more to confirm that the item is secure.

6. Label your box with the appropriate instructions
Now that your boxes are as secure as can be, the biggest threat will be how they are handled in the moving process. These boxes need much more care than any of the others. Every box should be labelled “FRAGILE” with clear and bold letters so everyone knows how to treat these boxes. Brightly colored labels saying “DO NOT STACK” are a good idea to avoid miscommunication. Stacking is the fastest way to break your glassware now. Especially if you are using a third party, labeling the box with how much of what is inside may be helpful to account for all items.

Following these helpful tips is the best way to make sure your items stay safe and intact throughout their move! For other helpful moving tips, be sure to check out our article on packing your move-in truck backwards.
