In 2019, we are celebrating the 49th anniversary of Earth Day! The theme this year, the Protect our Species campaign, recognizes the devastating effects we have had on other species. The Earth Day Network states “the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago.” The thing that separates this from 60 million years ago: change! There is so much we can do to change the damage we have done. This reversibility is key to act now before it is too late.
Those at the top of the endangered and threatened species list are bees, giraffes, coral reefs, whales, elephants, sea turtles, great apes, and so many more beloved species. All of these species serve very important functions both to their environments and the world as a whole.
The Earth Day Network has provided a guide to helping these many species individually as well as the Earth Day Network. Visit their website to learn more: https://www.earthday.org/campaigns/endangered-species/earthday2019/
